Featured on the cover of this year's Resource, "The Gimmel" is a part of Wendy Angel's 22 panel "Aleph-Beit" series. Taking two and a half years to complete, the series of oils was inspired by Angel's interest in linguistics and using the painting medium as a language.
Her interest in the "idea of language" reflects her dual degree in philosophy and art, from U.C. Santa Cruz. After completing her undergraduate studies, Wendy Angel attended the U.C Santa Cruz graduate program in art. She also took the opportunity to study abroad in France and Israel.
Angel's participation in 1994 in the yearlong Arad Arts Project, a six-month residency for foreign artists in Israel, as well as her study of Hebrew at an ulpan, inspired her to produce the "Aleph-Beit" series upon her return to the United States. Her trip to Israel reinforced her interest in Judaism and the Hebrew language. Having spent "hundreds of hours" viewing Christian art throughout her formal studies, Angel realizes the importance of raising awareness of the Jewish perspective and influence in art.
Primarily working with two-dimensional art, Angel works in a variety of mediums, including oils, textile, murals, ceramics, sculpture, carving, mixed media and digital art. Her work has been exhibited throughout California, Israel and Hawaii.
For more information about her work, Wendy Angel can be reached by mail at P.O. Box 221594, Carmel, CA 93922 or by e-mail at angelwk@bigfoot.com. She is currently seeking resources for publishing the entire "Aleph-Beit"series.
